Growing up in Chicago, Illinois, Terry Rose was fortunate to be awarded a public school painting scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago. After a successful career in design and art direction, Terry moved to Aspen, Colorado. Working in printmaking at the Anderson Ranch Art Center in nearby Snowmass, he was privileged to meet visiting artists and print with some of the finest master printers. Love of drawing and painting soon inspired a move to Los Angeles in 1987, evolving then as a major international art center. The color and light of Southern California soon became evident in his painting, with his Venice Beach studio filled with light and canvases blossoming with natural forms, often abstracted. His work was included in many exhibitions and he received several private commissions. His influences are many and include the stain paintings of Helen Frankenthaler and automatic drawings of Ellsworth Kelly. Terry’s unique language in painting combines different mediums, abstract/representational imagery, color and gesture. His experimental tendency infuses his work with freshness and beauty. He now lives and works closer to family on the east coast, once again also enjoying the change of seasons.
